	In 1882 the local Maori people of Waioeka requested that a Native School be provided in their district. They offered two acres of land in part Lot 337, Parish of Waioeka, represented by Hira Te Popo, Apera Makao, Wharenui, Tuhakia, Mihaka Mataika, Katupuku and Maaka Rangiihu, but the land was not able to be transferred to the Crown as it appeared all of their land had been granted in trust to their iwi under the Confiscated Lands Act 1867 and was inalienable. Instead,  four acres of Crown land located next to their kainga (village), adjoining Lot 337 Waioeka Parish and known as Lot 337A, Parish of Waioeka, Whakatane County, were surveyed and reserved by the Crown as a school site. The iwi made a contribution towards the cost of the land.

	Waioeka Native School opened on 26 February 1884 in a building constructed by Mr Abbott, and by the end of the year there were 42 students. The school committee Chairman, as recorded in 1885, was Pareka, and the first Head Teacher was Patrick Herlihy.

	In July 1887 the name of the school was changed to Waioweka.

	Over the next decades the size of the school was influenced by families becoming followers of Te Kooti and instead attending meetings, by illness of students and teachers, and by the distance some children had to travel. By the beginning of the 20th century, however,  the school numbers were growing, and the building became overcrowded, so a new classroom was built in 1904.

	In 1906 there was again much illness amongst school pupils, and others left to join Rua Kenana at Ruatoki, leading to the school roll reducing to 29 by 1908. Many of the children were European, and there was discussion over Waioweka becoming an Education Board school, but it was decided that it should remain as a Maori school. In 1915 the election of the School Committee was run by Europeans and the Maori community were not allowed to vote. However, the Department declared the election invalid and another was held.

	Over the next decades from 1915 to 1940 pupil numbers at the school fluctuated between 40 and 60, affected in part by illness.

	1934 was an eventful year for the school.  A Jubilee was held, raising 14 pounds for the school. In the same year, earthquakes affected the school and residence, resulting in a chimney falling down and the porch separating from the house. Later that year, electricity was connected to the school house, but  the school classrooms did not have electricity installed until 1949.

	In November 1952 approval was given for a new 2-roomed school, as the old one had deteriorated badly, and a new site was levelled in December of that year.  A further two acres were purchased by the Department in January 1954 to be used as a playing field, and by May 1955 the new school was completed and the old school removed.

	From the school's opening in 1884 until the end of the Maori Schools system of education in 1969 the school was administered by the Department of Education, after which it was taken over by the South Auckland (later Hamilton) Education Board, and from 1989 administration was taken over by a Board of Trustees and the Ministry of Education. In 1995 the school became a Kura Tuatahi (full primary school) in the Kura Kaupapa Maori system of schooling under Te Runanga Nui (national body of the Kura Kaupapa). The name of the school changed to Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Waioweka. Trustees are elected from the school whanau.

	Maori Schools

	The Native School system was established under the Native School Act 1867 to provide for the education of Maori.  The Act established a national system of village primary schools, under the control of the Native Department. Prior to this Maori were mainly educated in church missionary schools.  To establish schools it was necessary for 10 Maori living in an area to request that a school be established and they were required to provide land and half the cost of the buildings.  The requirement to provide for the costs of the building and teacher's salary was removed in 1871 but not the requirement to provide land.

	

	In 1879 the 57 native schools were transferred to the Department of Education, which had been established in 1877, and regular visits by an Education Department Inspector began. In 1880 conditions such as curriculum hours of instruction and governance in the Native Schools were standardised by the Native School Code, and in 1894 schooling became compulsory for Maori children

	The separate Maori School System administered by the Department of Education was abolished in 1969, and all remaining Maori schools were transferred to the control of the local Education Board.
