                    [0] => Te Kura o Te Teko is a full primary school (years 1 to 8) located in the western Bay of Plenty. Classes are held in either Maori or English, and parents can choose the language of instruction for their children. Many of the school pupils affiliate with Ngati Awa ki Rangitaiki.1,2 The school opened in 1881 as Te Teko Native School after a request from the local iwi to the Department of Education. It closed in 1886 after the eruption of Mt Tarawera and Rotomahana, but reopened in 1891 on the same site. In 1969 with the ending of the Maori Schools system the school passed to the control of the South Auckland Education Board, and in 1989, under the 'Tomorrow's Schools' policy, a Board of Trustees took over responsibility for the school's administration.

	Te Teko Maori School opened on 3 August 1881 in the blockhouse of a redoubt built at Te Teko by the second company of the Te Arawa Flying Column under the command of Captain GA Preece in the 1870s during the Land Wars. The first teacher was Mr MA Leech, and the roll for the first year was more than 30 children. The first Chairman of the School Committee was Matutaera. A full committee was appointed in 1884, and these were Matutaera (Chairman), Tare Tauhe, Oke Piau, Terini Pokahu and Hare Hira. By the end of 1884, the rol had reached 60.

	On 10 June 1886 Tarawera erupted, and boulders from Lake Rotomahana threw fireballs, boulders, scoria and ash to the depth of "more than a foot" onto the countryside around Te Teko. A boulder went through the roof of the school, and the weight of ash and scoria on the roof made it unsafe. Food crops were destroyed and stock died. Most of the population left the area, many following Te Kooti, and although many were to return over the following years as the land recovered,  it was decided to close the school from the end of 1886.

	By the end of 1888 a Government inspection showed that much of the soil in the district had recovered and the people had returned, and it was decided to reopen the school, though this was not done until 1891. The roll was 51 on re-opening. In 1894, two new classrooms were built.

	In 1913 a series of earthquakes destabilised the chimneys of the school and teacher's residence, and these were pulled down and replaced.

	Problems with sandflies and wet weather frequently led to teachers asking to be transferred away from the school, while problems with growing crops and diseases such as typhoid, influenza and smallpox also led to fluctuations in roll levels and sometimes the temporary closure of the school throughout its early years.

	Through the 1920s the region around Te Teko grew economically, with a hydro-electric station to serve Whakatane district opening in 1922, and a growing interest in dairying and European farming techniques amongst local Maori. A calf-club was established at the school, and there were lessons in general farming techniques and forestry. A plant nursery was set up at the school, tended by unemployed workers, with the intention of providing seedling trees for all the Native Schools in the North Island. Money from the sale of these trees was used to build a Dental Clinic in 1936.

	By 1924 growth in the Te Teko district led to a roll of 134 and rising, and in 1928 additions to the school buildings were requested. By April 1940 the roll reached 142, making Te Teko the largest school in the Bay of Plenty. The local Picture Theatre was rented as an additional classroom, and classes were also held in the school shelter sheds. At this time it was suggested that a separate school be opened for the European children at the school, but this was not supported by the Education Department. In October 1934, improvements and extensions were made to the school. In 1939, the Te Teko Hall was rented as a temporary additional classroom, and in August 1940 more new school rooms were completed.3

	By early 1963 the school roll had reached 428, and there were 13 staff including the Head Teacher. In 1969, with the end of the Maori Schools system of administration, control of the school passed to the South Auckland Education Board, and the school changed its name to Te Teko School, later known more often under its Maori name of Te Kura o Te Teko . In 1989 responsibility for administration was transferred to a local Board of Trustees under the Ministry of Education.

	Maori Schools

	The Native School system was established under the Native School Act 1867 to provide for the education of Maori.  The Act established a national system of village primary schools, under the control of the Native Department. Prior to this Maori were mainly educated in church missionary schools.  To establish schools it was necessary for 10 Maori living in an area to request that a school be established and they were required to provide land and half the cost of the buildings.  The requirement to provide for the costs of the building and teacher's salary was removed in 1871 but not the requirement to provide land.

	In 1879 the 57 native schools were transferred to the Department of Education, which had been established in 1877, and regular visits by an Education Department Inspector began. In 1880 conditions such as curriculum hours of instruction and governance in the Native Schools were standardised by the Native School Code, and in 1894 schooling became compulsory for Maori children

	The separate Maori School System administered by the Department of Education was abolished in 1969, and Te Teko School was transferred to the control of the South Auckland Education Board.4,5
