Tamihana Tikitere, former Chairman of Te Ngae School, sent a request for a school at Pukehina to the Education Department in 1909. Pukehina Maori School was opened by its Head Teacher, Miss G Handcock, in April 1914 on 5 acres of land provided by people of the Whakahemo iwi. The listed owners of the land were Mita Tahoka, Tauira Mita and Hera Takiura.

In 1935 a portable classroom was added, transferred from Te Aroha District High School, to deal with overcrowding of the existing classroom, and in 1940 two extra acres of land were acquired for playgrounds, and a three-roomed open air classroom built. In 1940, the school roll peaked at 96 students.

In 1964 the 50th jubilee was celebrated, and a brief history written which can be found on file BAAA 1001/1000c.5

In 1968 the school committee asked the Department of Education for the school to be transferred to the South Auckland Education Board, and this was done. The Head Teacher at the time of transfer, Mr Gerald T Kamau, together with his wife Mrs R Kamau continued to teach at the school.

Maori Schools

The Native School system was established under the Native School Act 1867 to provide for the education of Maori.  The Act established a national system of village primary schools, under the control of the Native Department. Prior to this Maori were mainly educated in church missionary schools.  To establish schools it was necessary for 10 Maori living in an area to request that a school be established and they were required to provide land and half the cost of the buildings.  The requirement to provide for the costs of the building and teacher's salary was removed in 1871 but  not the requirement to provide land.3

In 1879 the 57 native schools were transferred to the Department of Education, which had been established in 1877, and regular visits by an Education Department Inspector began. In 1880 conditions such as curriculum hours of instruction and governance in the Native Schools were standardised by the Native School Code, and in 1894 schooling became compulsory for Maori children

The separate Maori School System administered by the Department of Education was abolished in 1969, but one year before that Pukehina School had already been transferred to the control of the South Auckland Education Board, at the request of the school committee.4,5
