Following the Canterbury earthquakes of 2010 and 2011, depopulation in the 'red zoned' eastern suburbs resulted in a reduced attendance roll in many of the local schools. As part of the Ministry of Education's plan for education renewal in Christchurch, it was decided to merge Woolston and Phillipstown school. Te Waka Unua School opened in February 2015.
