	The Wildlife Branch of the Department of Internal Affairs was set up in 1947 to bring together the hitherto fragmented work of wildlife administration carried out by a variety of organisations such as acclimatisation societies, Department of Lands and Survey, Forest Service, Marine Department and the Department of Tourist and Health Resorts.

	The Hamilton Office was housed together with the Government Cleaning Service in Signals Building, Ward Street, Hamilton.

	In 1987 as a result of the Governments restructuring of agencies involved in environmental administration, its functions were taken over by the Department of Conservation.
