Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ), Te Kei Region Headquarters, was established on 1 July 2017 when FENZ was formed under the Fire and Emergency New Zealand Act 2017. It was responsible for carrying out the functions of FENZ in the Te Kei Region, which included:
- promotion of fire safety;
- providing fire prevention, response and suppression services;
- stabilising and rendering safe incidents involving hazardous substances;
- rescuing persons who were trapped as a result of transport and other accidents;
- providing urban search and rescue services; and
- providing a range of additional services where FENZ had the capacity to do so.1
The Te Kei Region was known as No.5 Region between 2017 and 2019.2
Te Kei Region Headquarters was also responsible for the region's fire stations and rural fire brigades.
The Te Kei Region covered Queenstown, Dunedin and Invercargill, and was broken down into the following areas:
- Central-North Otago Fire Area (Area No.23);
- East Otago Fire Area (Area No.24); and
- Southland Fire Area (Area No.25).3
