            [history] => Te Rangi Hospital was initially a private hospital situated in Collingwood Street, Nelson.  It provided surgical beds, a theatre and a wing for maternity patients.  The hospital prospered until the end of the 1930s, at which time conditions were becoming difficult for the matron.  Subsequently, the hospital was purchased by town doctors in 1940.  The hospital carried on until 1955 when it was sold to Newman Bros. Ltd, as it was found to be an uneconomic unit.  The hospital finally closed down permanently in 1966.
