Originally a nursing home and a Maternity Hospital, Motueka Hospital was taken over by the Nelson Hospital Board during the 1930s. The hospital was rebuilt in 1969, and redeveloped as Motueka Community Hospital in 1992-1993.  At the same time all the community based services were brought on site and were delivered from the health care Community Health Building. 



As at 2007 the Health Service for Older People provided a mixture of long term residential care (10 beds) as well as medical, rehabilitation and palliative care (5 beds).  Care was provided by registered nurses, enrolled nurses, hospital aides and support staff. A meals on wheels service provided meals to community clients Monday to Friday. Motueka Health Services also comprised two inpatient services: Health Service for Older People and Maternity Service along with a range of community based services.
Since 2001 the hospital has been under the governance of the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board.   However, a newly developed hospital, run by the Friends of the Motueka Hospital Trust (FOMHT), was set up in July 2009.  Under the 2009 plans, the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board still funded aged care and hospital services in the Motueka district but the FOMHT facility also signalled a move to more community based services in the region.  The new hospital created a 44 bed facility including:
