The Lyttelton Detachment Royal New Zealand Artillery was established in 1886 with the formation of the New Zealand Permanent Militia (from 1902 known as the New Zealand Permanent Force) as the No.3 Battery of the Permanent Artillery. It later became known as the Lyttelton Detachment of the Permanent Artillery (up to 1897) and the No.1 Service Company (1897-1902).
Initially, its principal duties were to look after and take charge of all guns, stores, ammunition, and munitions of war based in Lyttelton. Local Voluntary Naval artillery batteries were trained to assist the Lyttelton Detachment in working the heavy ordnance. When the New Zealand military forces were restructured in 1911, the Lyttelton Detachment continued in an instructional and cadre roll with the Lyttelton and Christchurch-based New Zealand Field Artillery and New Zealand Garrison Artillery territorial units.
