However it appears that the Animal Research Stations, which became stand-alone units from 1960, continued to be loosely termed the Animal Research Division (p.13, H.29 AJHR 1964 Vol. III). The work of the Animal Research Division was reported in its own section within the Department's Annual Report between 1940 and 1960; between 1961 and 1963, the research stations reported separately research work that had been undertaken. Establishment

The Animal Research Division was established on 1 April 1939 to co-ordinate the whole of animal research work conducted by the Department of Agriculture, and to work in co-operation with other institutions carrying out similar research. It commenced operations with a staff of 33 professional, 29 technical, and 15 clerical officers1.

Functions and Responsibilities

The work of Division was centred at the Animal Research Stations based at Wallaceville and Ruakura. Diseases causing mortality in farm animals and poultry were investigated at Wallaceville, while Ruakura was engaged on research in disorders that limited production. The stations co-operated where their respective fields overlapped2.

Activities carried out by the Division included:

  • Diagnostic services and supply of vaccines to Animal Industry Division;
  • Research in the parasitology of farm animals;
  • Investigation of problems of animal nutrition, and of bio-chemical aspect of animal diseases;
  • Investigations in the pathology and bacteriology of animal diseases;
  • Dairy, livestock and general farm work;
  • Chemical services to main stations and outside projects;
  • Investigations in animal nutrition;
  • Dairy, sheep, pig, stud stock and mixed farming;
  • Pasture management with special reference to its affect on production and diseases;
  • Experimental work in cobalt deficiency;
  • Localised research work outside the main stations;
  • Investigation of miscellaneous animal diseases;
  • Chemistry of soils and pastures, with special reference to production and animal disease3.

Structures

A Director headed the Division, who was responsible for its on-going operations. The Director reported to the Director-General of Agriculture, the permanent head of the Department.

Superintendents headed the Animal Research Stations at Wallaceville and Ruakura, who in turn reported to the Director. The Research Stations were staffed as follows:

Wallaceville Animal Research Station

  • Diagnostic Section - Pathologists, bacteriologists, technicians
  • Parasitology Section - Parasitologist, technicians
  • Animal Nutrition and Biochemistry Section - Biochemists and Veterinarians, technicians
  • Pathology and Bacteriology Section - Pathologists, bacteriologists, technicians
  • Farm Section: Farm Overseer

Ruakura Animal Research Station

  • Animal Nutrition Section – Animal Nutrition Officer, Veterinarian, technicians
  • Pasture Management Section – Agrostologists, technicians
  • Veterinary Research Section – Veterinary Research Officers, technicians
  • Chemistry Section – Chemists, Technicians
  • Farm Manager, Ruakura: Farm Staff
  • Farm Manager, Mamaku: Farm Staff

The Division also had a Chief Agricultural Chemist, supported by chemists and technicians, who provided services to the research stations and outside projects. Veterinary Research Officers and technicians also undertook localised research work outside the main research stations4.

Disestablishment

In 1960 the position of Director of Animal Research was disestablished bringing an end to the Animal Research Division, with the Ruakura and Wallaceville Animal Research Stations becoming stand-alone units5. The Superintendents of each station were redesignated Directors6.
