[history] => The War Museum Committee was set up with the intention of establishing a National War Museum to commemorate New Zealand's involvement in the First World War. It held its first meeting on 30 September 1919. As part of its task, the Committee commissioned war artists to complete artworks depicting the war. The artworks were to form the basis of the National Collection of War Art, and were to be displayed in the museum.
Plans for the War Museum were not fulfilled, and the idea of a separate National War Memorial Museum was eventually abandoned. Instead, the pre-existing Dominion Museum was relocated, and housed along side the National War Memorial when it was opened in 1936. The date on which the War Museum Committee was disestablished is unknown.
