This office was the service delivery arm for the Land Transport Safety Authority (LTSA) Operations Division in the Wellington region. It was responsible for the region's road safety issues and roading/traffic needs based on local geographical, cultural, ethnic and economic make-up. It maintained working relationships and partnerships within local communities to meet these needs.

The Wellington Regional Office focused on four main areas:

  • Education/information: road safety information was provided to Road Safety Co-ordinators, community groups, industry groups, commercial entities, schools, special needs groups, and road safety communities. Road Safety Co-Ordinators played an important role in in developing relationships and critical links with local communities, motivating community groups to address their own specific road safety problems and co-ordinating road safety community projects
  • Commercial licensing: managing the entry of operators into the transport industry, auditing their performance while in the transport industry, and managing their exit if such action was needed to be taken. The Wellington Regional Office was also involved in approving and renewing local driver testers and monitoring the performance of the LTSA's contracted driver licensing agencies within the district
  • Engineering: traffic engineers managed the Crash Analysis System and provided crash data and analysis to the public, the Police and local authority engineers and consultants. They produced annual road safety reports that identified key road safety problems for each local road-controlling authority area. Traffic engineers also promoted a programme of crash reduction studies with local road-controlling authorities and each year conducted surveys of local engineering works to measure compliance with relevant safety standards and best practice
  • Vehicle compliance: Wellington Regional Office staff carried out audits of local motor vehicle certifying agents and commercial licence transport operators to ensure vehicle compliance standards were maintained. Vehicle Compliance Officers conducted crash investigations involving heavy vehicles where mechanical defects were suspected to be the primary cause of a crash

In December 2004 LTSA was disestablished, and its functions were inherited by Land Transport New Zealand.
