Her work in TB care helped raise awareness of the disease, and following a local fund raising effort, a Sanatorium was opened in the Cashmere Hills in 1910, on a site donated for the purpose by the Cracroft-Wilson estate. The North Canterbury Hospital Board took over the running of the hospital before it opened, as private fund raising failed to raise the money necessary to complete the buildings, and fit them out. The sanatorium had 35 beds. Other hospital boards were alloed to build shelters on the hospital grounds. In 1913, Coronation Hospital was opened on the same site. This part of the institution was for advanced cases of TB, and had accommodation for 37 beds.Towards the end of the First World War, a 'Military Sanatorium' was built, to cater for the large numbers of soldiers who had contracted tuberculosis during and immediately after the war. This part of the hospital was initially administered by the Defence Department, but subsequently was taken over by the Board. It was set up to care for 100 patients; it was demolished as demand declined between the wars, only for a newer building - called the 'Upper San' or Annex - to be built towards the end of the Second World War. The Annex had 250 beds.[isAssociatedWithPlace] => Array ( [0] => Array ( [location] => Christchurch, Canterbury ) ) [itemType] => Agency [rdfType] => agent [recordIsMissing] => [setSpec] => agency ) )The combination of new drugs such as streptomycin and isoniazid, together with surgery (an operating theatre was opened at the hospital in 1950), saw the number of TB patients decline dramatically in the post war years. By 1959, beds formally dedicated for TB patient use were being used for the care of elderly. The Annex maintained its original function, in caring for patients with chest diseases, until it was closed in 1989 while the trend across the rest of the hospital was to focus on care for the elderly. The remainder of the hospital was closed in 1991, and the buildings demolished in 1993 to make way for a new housing development. In 1923, a Fresh Air Home for children was opened; this was designed to take children whose parents had TB, and provide them with healthy conditions in the hope that they would avoid contracting the disease later in life. A school was opened in 1926, and both were administered and run by the Hospital, and provided a model for the Health Department’s homes and open air schools. The Fresh Air Home changed names to the Hunstbury Children’s Home in 1956 as TB cases declined, and it instead functioned as a welfare home and school for children. The home and school were closed in 1971, and the Health Board then leased the property to a variety of welfare agencies, first as an orphanage called Little Acre, run the Presbyterian Social Services. The buildings themselves were removed in 1990[1].
