The Malvern Magistrate's Court had a combined civil and criminal jurisdiction in the Malvern area.  Malvern became known as Sheffield in a protracted process beginning with the official change of name of the post office in 1875.
In response to a request from the Malvern district, the Colonial Secretary wrote in 1876 to the Canterbury Provincial superintendent regarding a proposed Court of Petty Sessions at Malvern [1] and arrangements were made for monthly sittings by a magistrate from Christchurch. The first court registers date from 1877, but there was no clerk of the court appointed at that time and it appears that the court was held in Malvern and Coalgate in front of a magistrate/justice of the peace on circuit from Christchurch. Internal evidence suggests that Robert Colthart, an official of the East Malvern Roads Board, was acting as Clerk from at least 1881, but he was not officially appointed clerk of the Resident Magistrate's Courts at Sheffield and Coalgate until 17 October 1882 [2]. The combined registry of the Courts was established in the office of the East Malvern Roads Board at Sheffield, where the court sat. The Coalgate court hearings were held in the South Malvern Roads Board office at Coalgate. The magistrate may still have travelled from Christchurch as court sittings were only every few months.
The court registers reflect this; nearly all include information from both Sheffield and Coalgate Courts, with the exception of the civil record books. 
In 1895 a courthouse was built in the town of Darfield, which was becoming the main centre for the Malvern district.  The last court sittings at Sheffield and Coalgate were in late 1895.  On 6 January 1896 Robert Colthart was appointed clerk and bailiff of the magistrate's court, Darfield  [3] and he appears to have taken the contents of his registry with him to the new court, where many of the books continued to be used.
