[history] => In 1990, the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research underwent its most radical restructuring, with 23 divisions being amalgamated into just 10. As part of that process, the various DSIR industry divisions were merged to create DSIR Industrial Research. The Christchurch Centre, previously autonomous, became part of a larger unit, with senior management located in Auckland.
Like its predecessor the Southern Industrial Research Centre, the Industrial Development Christchurch [IDC] supported business and industry throughout the South Island by providing test environments for plant and equipment, advising on materials and construction techniques as well as with human resources. Work was also undertaken to research, design, build and service machinery and equipment for other government departments and private industry. For example, the unit assisted industry to secure contracts for the ANZAC Frigate project. In Christchurch, the IDC was organised into the following sections:
- Mechanical Science Group
- Electrical and Electronic Science Group
- Industrial Processing Science Group
The election of a new Government in 1990 brought with it a massive change in science policy, the end result of which was to see the DSIR split up and turned into independent Crown Research Institutes [CRIs]. DSIR Industrial Development was spun off into the CRI Industrial Research Limited.
