[history] => In 1990, the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research underwent a radical restructuring, with 23 divisions being amalgamated into just 10. As part of that process, the Entomology Division and the Plant Diseases Division were merged to create DSIR Plant Protection.
The aims of this division were to develop alternatives to chemical control of pests, diseases, and weeds. This included the breeding of plants resistant to disease, pests and weeds and the development of biological control strategies and integrated pest management. The Lincoln substation took an active role in all these initiatives, with its primary focus being on field crops.
The election of a new Government in 1990 brought with it a massive change in science policy, the end result of which was to see the DSIR split up and turned into independent Crown Research Institutes [CRIs]. DSIR Plant Protection was split four ways, with the weed, pest and disease control work done by the Lincoln Substation being absorbed into the New Zealand Institute for Crop and Field Research Ltd.
