In 1998 the Community Corrections Service was renamed the Community Probation Service although its roles and functions remained essentially unchanged. The Service managed community-based, non-custodial sentences such as supervision, community service, periodic detention and parole. It provided reports to the judiciary to assist in sentencing and release decisions, and also supplied information to the New Zealand Parole Board. The Probation Service provided rehabilitative programmes to offenders and administered funding to community-based providers of programmes. It worked closely with other agencies involved in rehabilitation and community work schemes, as well as victims' agencies, the Police and the District Court.
