It was situated 7 miles south of the Ruakura Animal Research Station in Claudelands, Hamilton. The main functions of Rukuhia were to study soil fertility, the effects of fertilisers, weed control, and other soil related disciplines (1). It was part of the wider Department of Agriculture organisation.
The Station was under the leadership of Dick Grimmett who brought with him chemists from the Chemistry Laboratory in Wellington. In order to study and solve problems, staff developed, constructed and adapted new analytical equipment for use on soils, plants and other biological materials (2).
In the first twenty years of the Station's history the most important research was the development of the advisory soil testing service; rates and types of phosphate fertiliser and P-fixation, trace elements especially molybdenum, cobalt and selenium, fertiliser and lime quality. Other areas of interest included earthworms, potash and sulphur fertilisers, irrigation, soil physical and microbial problems (2).
In 1967, soil research was shifted to Ruakura, staff and equipment were transferred but the station remained in Government hands.
