The Department of Conservation's second Northern Regional Office was established in 1997, together with Central and Southern Regional Offices (there had been an earlier Northern Regional Office in Auckland). It was based in Hamilton.
The role of the office was to support the Northern Regional General Manager to:
- build conservancy capability by improving systems and practices, developing staff capability, and overseeing succession management;
- identify the need for Quality Conservation Management systems, and develop, implement and maintain them;
- construct and maintain networks of functional specialists to identify and comunicate best practice, quality delivery and a learning environment; and
- ensure that there was sound science and information manegement, and external relationships to support operational work in conservancies.1
The Regional General Manager was accountable for implementing the strategic directions. They also had a role in:
- ensuring accountability in the line;
- allocating resources to meet national strategic priorities within regions and managing resources generally;
- representing a regional interest in national forums;
- representing a national perspective to regions and conservancies;
- supporting and mentoring conservators and their staff; and
- integrating Kaupapa Atawai perspectives within the Department, particularly with conservators.2
The Northland, Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Tongariro/Taupo and Waikato conservancies reported to the Northern Regional Office. On 1 January 2005, with the disestablishment of the Central Regional Office, the East Coast/Hawkes Bay, Wanganui and Wellington Conservancies were added to those reporting to Northern Regional Office.
In 2010 the Northern Regional Office was disestablished, with the conservancies within its jurisdiction reporting directly to Head Office.3
