The Hamilton Transport Department was initially small, the only service provided was for vehicle inspection. By the 1960s, services were expanded to include traffic safety and control, enforcement of traffic laws, driver education, driver licensing and motor vehicle registration.
Timeline
1944 - The first published instance of a Transport Department in Hamilton (1). The Department was situated in Knox Street, the Vehicle Inspector was M.S.M. Russell.
1945 - A Senior Traffic Inspector was added to the staff (2).
1953 - A Chief Traffic Officer was added to the staff (3).
1961 - Hamilton became a District Office (4). Staff included Traffic Officers, Vehicle Inspectors and a Senior School Inspector.
1968 - The Hamilton offices of the Transport Department and Department of Civil Aviation were amalgamated to become the Ministry of Transport, Hamilton.
