The Pukearuhe Police Station was responsible for policing within the surrounding area. It was part of the Taranaki Police District.
Pukearuhe in the 1860s was the northernmost frontier settlement of the Taranaki region. It was vulnerable to raids by Maori, and in 1869 a war party of the Maori King movement attacked, killing several people. As a result of this, the Armed Constabulary sent one hundred men up from Wanganui to support the provincial forces and to set up a garrisoned force there.  During the 1870s, the area became gradually more stable and more settlers arrived.  Armed Constabulary forces remained in the area however, until in 1885 the field outpost was abandoned and the men were transferred to a garrison in Opunake. At this time a police station was formed at Pukearuhe as part of the Taranaki District, and was staffed by one constable.
The station remained open until 1896. In 1891 it became part of the new Wanganui and West Coast Police District.
