The Picton Police Station was responsible for policing within the surrounding area. It was part of the Wellington Police District.
Initially the station at Picton was part of the Marlborough District. The station was recorded in 1871 as having a staff of one sergeant and one constable. In 1891 it became part of the Wellington and Marlborough District, and the number of staff members increased. Further changes in 1906 brought about the creation of a new Wellington District, to which Picton belonged until the creation of the Nelson District in 1928.
Some records from Murchison are included within the Picton Police Station records (see series 17961). At the time the records were created there was a police station in existence at Murchison, which was part of the Greymouth District. It is not known why these records are included in Picton's.
