The Hawera Police Station was responsible for policing within the area surrounding Hawera.
From the early 1870s Hawera Police Station existed as part of the Wanganui and Patea District, and staff consisted of two mounted and two foot constables. A blockhouse had been built at Hawera for the 'use and protection of settlers', and Armed Constabulary members were assigned civil duties - they were to be available to provide police protection for the settlers if required.
In November 1875 a sergeant and constable of the Armed Constabulary in Hawera played a peacekeeping role when local Maori were attacked by drunken pakeha, and succeeded in preventing revenge attacks by ensuring that those responsible in the attack were punished.
By 1877 the number of police in Hawera appears to have been reduced to one mounted sergeant and one mounted constable, and the station had become part of the Taranaki District. 1879 brought a large number of men from the Reserve Branch of the Constabulary Force to the area, as animosity between local settlers in Hawera and Maori in the Taranaki region escalated. The settlers demanded action against Maori who were employing passive resistance to avoid losing land, and many arrests were made.
In 1881 the creation of the Wanganui District brought further changes, and permanent manpower at Hawera police station was reduced to one sergeant only.
A new district was created in 1885 - the counties of Taranaki, Clifton, Hawera and Patea were merged to become the Taranaki District. At this time provincial police were still being aided by constables from the military wing of the Constabulary Force, when necessary. In 1891 a re-structuring of the police districts within New Zealand led to the creation of the Wanganui and West Coast District, which assumed responsibility for Hawera police station.
Further changes took place in 1906, when the new Wanganui District was created. Hawera Police Station continued to be part of this district, until it moved to the newly created New Plymouth District in 1921.
