The Dannevirke Police Station was responsible for policing within the Dannevirke area. It was part of the Napier Police District.
It is known that 'Danevirk' had a police presence in 1877, as one mounted constable is noted in records for the Napier Police District.The Police Gazette of 1880 states that the 'Danevirk' police station was to be closed. The 1884 Police Gazette contained information about the temporary re-opening of the Danevirk station, which continued to exist, throughout several changes of administration; in 1891 Danevirke (as the name was now commonly spelt) came under the jurisdiction of the Wanganui and West Coast District, until 1893, when it became part of the Napier and East Coast District. The modern spelling of the town, Dannevirke, seems to have been in use from about 1897 onwards.
The next notable episode in the station's history appears to be an incident in 1900, caused by a disagreement between Tasmanian bush-fellers and local Maori. In attempting to keep the peace, local police were forced to use revolvers against the mob besieging the police station.
Further re-structuring of the police system in 1906 led to the creation of a Napier District, which had authority for Dannevirke police station.
