This agency was created by Archives New Zealand to describe the records transferred to it by the office of the Registrar of Companies, New Plymouth. It includes material dated between 1878 and 1977.
The position of Registrar of Companies, New Plymouth, was created under the Joint-Stock Companies Act 1860. It is not clear when the first registrar was appointed, but it was certainly before 1866 [1]. The office was responsible for registration of companies, and later building societies, industrial and provident societies, incorporated societies, and charitable trusts, in the Taranaki region [2].
The office appears to have been part of the Treasury Department until 1878, when the function of registration of companies passed to the Stamp Department. Officials in district offices of the Land Transfer and Deeds Registration Department, which was part of the Stamp Department, became registrars of companies [3]. Registrars of companies remained part of the Stamp Department until 1 July 1950, when the Lands and Deeds Department moved into the Department of Justice, becoming the Lands and Deeds Division [4]. In 1968 a review of the Companies Act recommended the creation of a Commercial Affairs Division in the Department of Justice that was responsible for both companies offices and official assignees. The new division was created in 1972.  However, the division did not have an office in New Plymouth, and registration of companies and other entities in New Plymouth was still carried out by the local Land Titles Office [5].
