An Inspectorate Office of the Marine Department was established in Napier in 1904.  The Marine Department was responsible for administering legislation (including the Shipping and Seamen Act 1877 and the Inspection of Machinery Act 1908) which provided for:
the safe navigation and training of marine officers;
the sea-worthiness of vessels and the use of parts;
the inspection of boilers, lifts and other power-driven machinery on land (Inspection of Machinery Act); and
the administration and servicing of all fixed and floating aids to navigation for use by coastal and overseas shipping vessels.
The Napier Inspectorate Office appears to have been mainly concerned with the inspection of machinery and boilers, and examination of marine engineers, land engineers and engine drivers (this is reflected in the Record Group holdings).
It is not known when the Napier Office closed.
