Genesis Power was an integrated energy generation, trading, retailing and metering business. Trading as Genesis Energy its core business was the generation of electricity (including the management of related assets) and the marketing, trading and retailing of energy. The company was formed in 1999 following the split of the Electricity Corporation of New Zealand (ECNZ) into three individual State Owned Enterprises (SOEs).  The Corporate/Head office was based in Auckland.

The company owned various electricity generation assets including the coal-fired thermal power station at Huntly, a 48MW (mega-watt) open gas cycle turbine at Huntly, hydro stations at Tongariro and Lake Waikaremoana, the Hau Nui Wind Farm in the Wairarapa, and co-generation facilities at large industrial sites at Te Awamutu and Kinleith. The company also invested in the development of New Zealand’s oil and gas reserves as a partner in the offshore Kupe gas project (2006) and the onshore Cardiff deep gas project (2004).

The reforms of the energy sector in 1999 also allowed generation companies to act as electricity and gas retailers. Genesis acquired the retail electricity business of Wairarapa Electricity Ltd, Central Power Ltd and Powerco Ltd in April 1999 providing retail electricity services to customers located primarily in the Wairarapa, Manawatu, Taranaki and Wanganui regions. In August 2001 it acquired the Natural Gas Corporation's (NGC) "On Energy" - its North Island electricity customer base and in August 2002 Energy Online’s retail electricity business. Subsequently (October 2002) NGCs residential gas business comprising 95,000 customers was also acquired and in June 2003 it bought the FreshStart retail customer base from Todd Energy.
