The Government Superannuation Fund Authority (GSF) was established as a Crown entity by the Government Superannuation Fund Act 1956,  later becoming an autonomous Crown entity under the Crown Entities Act 2004. The authority is governed by a board appointed by the Minister of Finance.

The GSF consisted of seven superannuation schemes for public sector employees, including schemes for the public service, the Police, the Armed Services, Members of Parliament and judges. All schemes were closed to new entrants on 30 June 1992.

All decisions relating to the business of the Authority were made by, or under delegation from, the Government Superannuation Fund Authority Board. The Board outsourced its schemes administration, investment management and custody.
