Te Wananga o Raukawa was founded by Te Ati Awa, Ngati Raukawa, and Ngati Toa Rangatira in 19811, and became an incorporated body on 3 October 1984.1 It was a centre of higher learning devoted to the world of Maori knowledge, (Matauranga Maori). The method of teaching at Te Wananga-o-Raukawa was based upon knowledge and wisdom passed on by ancestors. Through holistic approach to teaching and learning, courses were based on group learning or ‘hui" rather than through individual learning.
In 1993 Te Wananga o Raukawa was recognised by the Crown under the Education Amendment Act 1990.
