The Western Institute of Technology in Taranaki Limited (WITT) was established in 1972 as Taranaki Polytechnic, in accordance with the Education Act 1964.
WITT had four academic schools:
- School of Maori Enterprise, Business and Technology: comprised of programmes related to Maori Enterprise, Te Reo, Administration, English Language, Business, Management and Information Technology.
- School of Nursing, Health and Wellness: comprised of programmes related to Nursing, Healthcare, Beauty, Hairdressing, Makeup, Foundation Studies, Fitness and Mental Health and Wellbeing.
- School of Trade Training, Primary and Creative Industries: comprised of programmes relating to Art and Design, Primary Industries (Agriculture, Pest Control, Forestry, Horticulture), Trades Training (Automotive, Construction, Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing, Gasfitting and Drainlaying), and Hospitality.
- School of Engineering, Energy and Infrastructure: comprised of programmes relating to Engineering, NZIHT (New Zealand Institute of Highway Technology), Infrastructure Works, and Energy, Oil and Gas.1
Campuses were situated in New Plymouth, Chamber House, and Hawera.
WITT was governed by a board of directors.
On 1 April 2020, in accordance with the Education Act 1989 (as amended by the Education (Vocational Education and Training Reform) Amendment Act 2020), WITT become a limited liability company and wholly-owned subsidiary of Te Pukenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology (NZIST).2
