MAF Food Assurance Authority came into being on 1 July 1999 and was the result of the restructuring of the MAF Regulatory Authority, which resulted in the establishment of a separate Food Assurance Authority and MAF Biosecurity Authority.
MAF Food Assurance Authority’s role was to ensure food safety and provide related assurances, such as quality of grade, to domestic and international users and consumers. Fundamentally the agency provided for  ‘sanitary’ (human health) assurance.
MAF Food Assurance Authority continued the role of MAF Regulatory Authority to account for the certification of exports of primary food products, and also assumed responsibility for these products on the domestic market by incorporating the role carried out by the Ministry of Health. So the establishment of MAF Food Assurance Authority also involved the transfer of relevant staff from the Ministry of Health into MAF.
MAF Food Assurance Authority combined the work carried out by the Meat and Seafood, Dairy, and Agricultural Compounds and Veterinary Medicines Sections of MAF Regulatory, with the domestic food safety roles of the Ministry of Health.
