[0] => On 22 June 1944 Cyril Louis Norton Newall, Governor-General of New Zealand proclaimed the construction of the Arohata Borstal Institution for young offenders and Arohata Reformatory for Women in Tawa, 12 kilometres north of Wellington. In 1945, the borstal and prison opened, and the Reformatory was renamed as Arohata Prison for Women. The facilities and lands of both borstal and prison were expanded in 1955, 1968 and 1974. In 1998, Arohata was declared to be a corrective training institution and a prison, to be jointly known as Arohata Prison.

In Unit 1 - the Tizard and Fergusson wings - up to 50 medium and minimum security females including remand prisoners are held. Unit 2 consists of the Probation, Wakefield, Reeves and Te Araroa (20 bed drug treatment unit) wings holding up to 88 minimum security female inmates.
Work includes sewing, laundry, gardening, grounds, maintenance, cooking, cleaning, and community work gangs, individual voluntary community work and work parole. Musical equipment and facilities, a swimming pool and gymnasium and various recreation programmes are available to inmates.
