[history] => On 15 March 1919 Arthur William de Brito Savile, Earl of Liverpool, the Governor-General of New Zealand proclaimed the building of a prison in Upper Hutt, to be called the Wi Tako Prison. It was mainly for first time male offenders.
In 1957 Wi Tako Prison was also declared to be a Borstal Institution. Wi Tako's status as a Borstal Institution was revoked in 1984 and it was declared to be both a regional prison and a Youth Prison for minimum sentenced offenders from the Porirua Basin, Lower Hutt and the Wairarapa. The aim of a regional prison is to encourage contact between inmates and their families/whänau so as to assist the offenders re-integration into the community
In 1990, Wi Tako Prison had its name changed to Rimutaka Prison and became a receiving institution for inmates on remand as well as both minimum and medium sentenced offenders from throughout the Wellington region
The cell block within the newly constructed Wellington High Court building on Molesworth Street, Wellington was formally declared to be part of Rimutaka Prison in 2000.
Rimutaka Prison is the largest prison in the Wellington area and is adjacent to the Trentham army camp. The prison comprises nine separate units each of which is run by a Unit manager and a team of unit staff. Unit 1: this unit does not house inmates and is responsible for Prison security, escorts, receiving new inmates, and police liaison. Unit 2: holds 60 remand inmates and high security sentenced inmates. Unit 3: holds 56 medium sentenced inmates and newly sentenced inmates awaiting classification and transfer. Units 4 through to 8 are all 60 bed units for medium/minimum inmates only. Unit 9 is a 30 bed intensive therapy violence prevention unit. There is also a 40 bed Youth unit for inmates under 20.
All sentenced inmates are required to work during the day where work is available. This work within the prison includes general prison housekeeping/maintenance, joinery, kitchen, garden and farm. Outside work for selected inmates is provided at the Prison Staff College, Upper Hutt City Council and on community projects. Inmates are paid a small amount for any work they do.
A range of sporting activities are available within the prison which has a sports field and gymnasium. Each unit also has its own recreation area. Rimutaka has a library/information resource centre which supports the recreational, education, and personal development of inmates and staff.
Community programmes available to inmates include:
· alcohol/substance abuse therapy
· cultural development
· life/social skills training
· stopping violence therapy
· pre release needs training
· vocational/work training
