The Wellington Institute of Technology LImited was established as the Petone Technical School in 1904. It name changed a number of times: Petone Technical College, Hutt Valley Memorial Technical College, Petone Technical Institute and Hutt Valley Polytechnic.1
The Hutt Valley Polytechnic was renamed the Wellington Institute of Technology in 2001, and operated as WelTec.
On 1 July 2001 the Central Institute of Technology was merged into WelTec, in accordance with the Education Act 1989 and the entral Institute of Technology Disestablishment and Incorporation into Wellington Institute of Technology Order 2001 (SR 2001/78).
WelTec and Whitireia Community Polytechnic became strategic partners in 2012, delivering a range of courses. Between 2012 and 2020 both were governed by a Council as set out under the Education Act 1989, and had a single academic board.2
In April 2020 the Council was replaced with a joint Board of Directors.
On 1 April 2020, in accordance with the Education Act 1989 (as amended by the Education (Vocational Education and Training Reform) Amendment Act 2020), WelTec and Whitireia became limited liability companies (legally known as Wellington Institute of Technology Limited and Whitireia Community Polytechnic Limited) and wholly-owned subsidiaries of the Te Pukenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology.3
