The Engineers Registration Board was serviced by the Public Works Department, presumably till 1988. The Institute of Professional Engineers NZ (IPENZ) seems to have taken over this function on behalf of the Ministry of Commerce, who were responsible for the Engineers Registration Act from 1988. Its successor, the Ministry of Economic Development continued in this role from 2000.
The Charter Of Professional Engineers Act 2002 revoked the Engineers Registration Act 1924, the Engineers Registration Board and associated register. There was a transitional period till 31 December 2003.
From 2004, IPENZ, who were contracted to the Ministry of Economic Development, were responsible for the assessment and registration of engineers.
