The State Forests Office, often referred to as the State Forests Department, was established when Captain J. Campbell-Walker was offered the appointment of Conservator of State Forests in 1875 under the New Zealand Forests Act 1874. Prior to his appointment, Captain Campbell-Walker was head of the Forest Department in the Madras Presidency (in India).
Campbell-Walker was tasked with organising the Office on arrival in New Zealand in 1876.1 He visited a number of areas around the country looking into the forestry industry.
His reported his findings to the Commissioner of State Forests on 16 March 1877, outlining the proposals for the working and organisation of the State Forests Office. However, it appears that responsibility for forests was given to the Crown Lands Department, and the State Forests Office disestablished.
