            [history] => As a result of a review of the Department's structure and activities carried out in 1987/88, the Department was completely restructured with effect from 1 October 1988. 

The Department is headed by the Secretary of Labour (Chief Executive) who maintains a central Corporate Office of advisers and general services. The Department's substantive functions are then carried out by five separate Service Units, each headed by a General Manager who reports directly to the Chief Executive. Each Service Unit is a self-contained entity, employing its own support staff (except to the extent that Corporate Office provides a salaries service and legal services). 

The functions currently carried out by the Department are: 

- to promote a fair labour market; 

- to promote a state of labour relations that helps to promote a fair labour market; and 

- to advise, assist and inform the Government and the public about the labour market.
