The New Zealand Milk Board, Hamilton District Office, was established in mid-1957, when the Board decided that the formation of a district office in Hamilton would make for more efficient and satisfactory administration of its interests in the South Auckland area. Mr. D. Riley was appointed the first District Manager of the office.1 The office inherited the responsibility for the Thames Valley, Waikato, King Country and Bay of Plenty regions (which became the Hamilton administrative area) from the Board's Auckland District Office.

The office was responsible for fulfilling the Board's functions and responsibilities - primarily the provision of an adequate supply of milk of good quality for human consumption, and the organisation of the town milk industry within the Board's Hamilton administrative area. Activities carried out within the area included the administration of the national milk scheme, selection and approval of milk vendors, and the administration of distribution zoning schemes.

The Hamilton administrative area consisted of the following milk districts (as established under the Milk Districts Order 1968):

  • Waikato;
  • Thames Valley;
  • Waitomo;
  • South-east Waikato;
  • Western Bay of Plenty;
  • Rotorua;
  • Whakatane;
  • Murupara; and
  • Opotiki.2

The town milk industry was deregulated under the Milk Act 1988, which officially disestablished the New Zealand Milk Board and all its offices on 1 April 1988.
