	Margaret Kerslake Shields (nee Porter) was born on December 18th 1941 in Wellington. She attended Wellington Girls' College. She graduated Victoria University in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. Shields amrried in 1960 to Patrick John Shields, they have two daughters together. Margaret Shields was said to be "part of a strong cohort of New Zealand women who were the backbone of the second women's movement in New Zealand, and set up several research and lobbying organisations." In 1966 Shields and a friend, Mary Mowbray set up the Society for Research on Women. Where they organised a two year long survey to give more insight into the reality of life as a woman in New Zealand. She worked for the Department of Statistics from 1973 to 1981, where she helped set up a Social Indicators Unit and overhauled the electoral systems in the Labour Party. Shields also founded the Women's Electoral Lobby in 1975.

	In 1975 Shields began her political career by standing for the Karori electorate representing the Labour Party, she was unsuccessful. In 1981 she won the Kapiti electorate and held it for nine years.

	She served three years on the N.Z. Executive of the Labour Party, three years on the Policy Council, was President of the Labour Women's Council, and founder of the Newlands-Paparangi branch. She held the following positions in parliament during her career:

	After losing her seat in 1990, Shields became director of the United Nations International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women and spent three years based in Santa Domingo in the Dominican Republic. She returned to New Zealand and was elected Chairman of the Greater Wellington Regional Council from 2001 to 2004. She also held offices with the United Nations Development Fund for Women, the National Council of Women and the Federation of Graduate Women.

	Margaret Shields passed away on May 29th 2013.
