[history] => Following the establishment of the Department of Corrections the Community Corrections Service introduced area offices to the service administrative structure. Area offices were established in January 1997, reporting to the General Manager, Community Probation Service, Department of Corrections Head Office.
By 1999 the Community Corrections Service had been renamed the Community Probation Service. From 2001 the service had 15 area offices overseeing the work of 70 regional service centres which covered 143 locations, supported by a head office structure. It managed 45, 000 annual community-based sentences and orders including supervision, community programmes, community service, period detention, home detention, habilitation centres and parole. Habilitation centres were approved residential centres operating programmes for offenders designed to discover and address the causes/factors contributing to their offending.
By 2003 the Service managed approximately 38,000 annual community-based sentences and orders, including supervision, community work, home detention, parole orders and release from prison on conditions.
The district offices under the jurisdiction of the Wellington Area Office were Wellington, Upper Hutt, Lower Hutt and Porirua Offices (each incorporating court servicing and sentence management offices and community work centres), and the Paraparaumu Service Centre (which incorporated a reporting centre and a community work centre).
