The New Zealand Milk Board, Palmerston North District Office was established in December 1953, when the Board was given the power to appoint its own staff and manage its own affairs under the Milk Amendment Act 1953. A District Manager (initially known as a regional officer) was appointed by the Board to be responsible for the office - Mr. R. D. Williams was the first Palmerston North Regional Officer.1
The office was responsible for fulfilling the Board's functions and responsibilities - primarily the provision of an adequate supply of milk of good quality for human consumption, and the organisation of the town milk industry within the Board's Palmerston North administrative area. The Palmerston North administrative area consisted of the following milk districts (as established under the Milk Districts Order 1968):
- Poverty Bay;
- Wairoa;
- Hawke's Bay;
- Taumaranui-Turangi;
- Ruapehu;
- North Taranaki;
- Central Taranaki;
- South Taranaki;
- Wanganui;
- Rangatikei;
- Manawatu; and
- Dannevirke.2
The Palmerston North District Office closed when the New Zealand Milk Board was disestablished on 1 April 1988.
