The principal part of its business is carrying out attest audits, that is audits leading to an opinion on the truth and fairness of statutory accountability statements (principally financial statements and statements of service performance). Audit New Zealand's mission is to "be the leading provider of independent assurance services to the Auditor-General, public sector entities and the community".
Audit New Zealand comprises a National Office located in Wellington and ten district offices.
