Hutton (formerly Master of Art at the Perth School of Art) took up his post as Drawing Master in January 1870. He was charged with conducting separate classes for girls, for High School pupils and other youths wishing to attend, for pupil teachers and school-masters and school-mistresses (on Saturdays), and (evenings) for young men wishing to learn freehand, perspective, geometrical, architectural, mechanical and model drawing. He was responsible also for drawing lessons in as many District Schools as possible.
The annual reports record numbers of students receiving instruction. In 1872, 104 students attended classes at the School of Art, and many more received instruction in the District Schools. By 1876, a total of 2262 were receiving instruction (in both categories).
