Hutton took charge of the Otago Museum in November 1873. At that stage the Museum was in temporary accommodation, and Hutton hoped to find permanent accommodation in the near future. (The Board of Trustees was first appointed in 1865, and in 1868 part of the new Post Office Building was to be set aside for the purpose of a Museum, but it was only in 1874 that an annual report was presented to the Provincial Council. This is the basis of the agency dates given in this documentation).
The Museum was open to the public every afternoon, including holidays. The initial emphasis was on natural history, with displays of stuffed birds, and efforts to display collections of bones (hampered by lack of space).
Hutton also held the post of Provincial Geologist, and therefore made several expeditions to various parts of the Province to investigate coal fields, gold and other aspects of the geology of Otago.
