This agency was the result. Initially it was known as the Girls' Division of the High School, but from 1872 on it appears to have been treated as a separate institution in its own right.
The school opened on 6 February 1871 with 78 pupils. By the beginning of the second quarter of that year, it had 122 pupils, including 15 boarders. By 1875 the average quarterly enrolment was 168 pupils. Pupils had to be at least nine years old, and had to pass an entrance examination in basic reading, writing and arithmetic. Lessons were given by the Lady Principal (Mrs M G Burn), visiting music teachers, and the provincial drawing master, and masters from the Boys' High School also gave lessons in the higher branches of learning. In 1874 a master was appointed to teach higher English, Mathematics and Science. Subjects taught during the provincial period included English, Reading, Spelling, Writing from Dictation, Grammar, Geography, History, Arithmetic, English Composition, Grammatical Analysis, Paraphrasing, Physical Geography, Physics, Botany, French, Music, Drawing, Singing, Chemistry, Needlework, Zoology, Physiology, Dancing, Gymnastics, German and Knitting.
