[history] => The Weights and Measures Division of the Department of Labour was responsible for the administration of the Weights and Measures Act 1987 and the Regulations made under the Act.

The primary function of the division and its inspectors was to ensure, by means of regular inspections and other checks, that traders of goods complied with the law in respect of weights and measures, thus securing the rights of consumers.

Related functions included:

Examination of new weighing and measuring equipment imported or manufactured locally, to ensure that the instruments are not capable of facilitating fraud.
Annual testing of all weighing and measuring instruments used for trade to ensure that the instruments were within the prescribed maximum permissible errors
Custody and care of the department's primary standards and the checking of standards located in district offices at intervals of not more than five years.

The Weights and Measures Division of the Department of Labour became the Trade Measurement Unit of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs in 1988. There had been regional offices in 15 locations throughout New Zealand. However, following a review of the service in mid-1989, it is believed changes took place to this structure.

The current Ministry of Consumer Affairs' Trading Standards Service works to make sure traders are aware of, and obey the laws regarding weight and measure. They administer the Weights and Measures Act by:

Carrying out spot checks of weighing and measuring equipment
Checking the weight of packaged goods
Investigating complaints from the public.

The Training Standards Service has offices in Auckland, Wellington, Palmerston North and Christchurch.
