The Aliens Appeal Tribunal was set up along with the Aliens Authorities in October 1940. It was an appellate tribunal - its members being appointed individually as Aliens Authorities for Wellington. The Tribunal members are thought to have been Mr Justice Callan, Mr C. H. Weston, K.C., and Mr J. H. Collins. It should be noted that these three men previously formed the Aliens Tribunal whose functions were taken over by the Aliens Authorities.

The functions of the Aliens Appeal Tribunal were defined as:

  • a) To hear appeals against the recommendations of the Aliens Authorities;
  • b) To advise the Minister on such matters as are referred to it by the Minister.

Despite the fact that the Aliens Appeal Tribunal was in existence for five years between 1940 and 1945, there is little documentation of its activities available.

The Aliens Appeal Tribunal was disestablished by the Aliens Emergency Regulations 1940 Amendment No. 3 of November, 1945, under which regulations which enabled the Tribunal to function were revoked.
