This file series documented the presence of the Wildlife Service in the Northland region. Wildlife surveys, management and protection of wildlife (including individual species) and management and protection of their habitat were recorded.

Earlier relevant survey and scientific information has been filed for information, as have records of the work of the Service in Northland before the establishment of a permanent staff in Whangarei in 1971.

When the Wildlife Service was absorbed into the new Department of Conservation in 1987, this file series continued to be used by the Northland Conservancy, until 1989, when the Conservancy set up its own filing system.

This file series was introduced in 1989 to replace a system of inherited file series and possibly a multiple number system (no Kaitaia files from the latter system have been transferred, so it is not certain whether that system was used there), and covered all the office's functions. Three-character subject prefixes were alphabetical, alpha-numeric, or numeric. Numeric prefixes mostly denoted particular sections of the Conservation Act, such as 289 and 290. Mixed or alpha-numeric prefixes included H2O for water rights and S58 for Section 58. This Kaitaia area office series was created and used in the Kaitaia office/field centre, and before 1997 in the Te Paki Field Centre. The subject codes are similar to those used in the Northland Conservancy office in Whangarei.

The series was closed in 2001.

The series was replaced in 2001 when an electronic records management system was introduced into the Department of Conservation.

It appears that relevant material from earlier (including inherited) file series have been filed within this series, and also some later papers on subjects already registered in this file series have continued to be added to the files after the closure of the series.

These files relate to the running of the Wildlife Service in Auckland. They cover subjects relating to wildlife surveys, protection of endangered species, pest control and conservation of environments.

Earlier relevant survey and scientific information has been filed for information, as have records of the work of the Service in the Auckland region before the establishment of a permanent staff in Auckland in 1969.

When the Wildlife Service was absorbed into the new Department of Conservation in 1987, these files were inherited by the Auckland Conservancy.

These are case files relating to leases and licences for land tenure.  Each type of tenure has a different alphabetical abbreviation which was used as a prefix to the file number.

The series was initially thought to have started in 1924, on the assumption that the files and the ledgers (series 1119) were set up around the same time. However, cross-references in series 1132 show that the date must be 1922 or earlier.

Files from the Auckland office of Lands and Survey on the administration of National Parks, including lease files. Many earlier files appear to have been renumbered with the NP prefix. These include some reserves files.

Relevant files were passed to the Department of Conservation, on its creation - these NP files were passed to the Auckland Conservancy. In some cases later papers were added to existing files after they had been handed over.

This series originated in the Auckland District Office of Lands and Survey, but dealt with functions including administration of conservation land and reserves for the Northland area. Local files, using exactly the same classification system, were concurrently created in Whangarei.

In 1987 the Department of Conservation was formed, taking over the functions relating to reserves and land management and designation. At this time files were transferred from Lands and Survey Auckland office to the Department of Conservation Northern Regional Office (in Auckland). At the same time it is assumed that the Whangarei files were transferred from Lands and Survey to the Northland Conservancy office. They continued to be used by the new agency. By 1996 the Auckland files relating to the Northland area were in use by the Whangarei Conservancy office, uniting the regional and local files from this series. It is probable that the files were transferred from Auckland to Whangarei around 1989, when the Northern Regional Office in Auckland was closed.

This series consists of Field notebooks for various forestry/conservation sites in the Northern Region. The region included Northland, Auckland and Coromandel, and areas serviced by the Auckland Regional Office of the Department of Conservation. Subjects covered by the notebooks includes traverses and measurements, forest reconnaisances, type mapping, forest plotting, boundary surveys, regeneration of Kauri and other forest types, archaeological notes and measurements, and linear samples of forests.

Some of the field books have been assigned a single running number, and they appear to have come from a much larger sequence, as these numbers are in the 600s and 700s.

The series includes an index with details of the contents of some field books for Great Barrier, Herekino, Puketi, Russell and Waipoua Forests from 1924 to 1978.
