Under the Shipping and Seamen Act of 1877 and amendments, the master of every N.Z. and home-trade ship, and every Commonwealth ship departing from a N.Z. port, had to have an agreement with the crew in accordance with the provisions of the Act, and an official log book was also required to be kept for the duration of the voyage. 

During the late 1970s, until the early 1980s, the Maritime Division of the Ministry of Transport undertook a microfilming project to conserve space. Ships' logs and articles of agreement from 1944 were therefore microfilmed onto positive roll film. 

With the exception of government steamers, very few logs and articles of agreement for crews of ships survive for the years before 1945, however a few original documents dating from 1897-1948 can be located through the Marine Record Group lists (M series 23 and 30, series 16626 and 16633).

Record Group series M31 (series 16634) are photocopied indexes to ships' logs, articles of agreement and crew lists.
