This is an artificial series of maps and plans of Wellington City, dating from the 19th and early 20th centuries, that were formerly in the custody of the Department of Lands and Survey [L&S]. When the Department was disestablished in 1987 the plans were identified as being of historical value by Cathy Trewby and set aside for permanent retention, at a time when a lot of material was being thrown out. Ms Trewby, Senior Advisor at Land Information New Zealand, also arranged for the transfer of the plans to Archives New Zealand in 2002 - 2003. 

Very little is known about the plans' origins and functions but some appear to have been created by the Lands and Survey Department or the Surveyor-General's Office. Many of the plans have been annotated with numbers and additional information but there is no clear system of classification. Nor do they appear to be from one series. The plans were known to have been held in the late 1970s up to 1987 in the Land Administration (ie crown land administration/gazettals and legislative section of the former L & S) and may have had relevance to the work that this section undertook. 

All the plans are published lithographs on canvas backing. Some appear to have been bound in the past, and were possibly intended for public display as part of a notification process.

Although there are other series of miscellaneous maps and plans documenting land transactions (e.g. Series 997), this particular set of records has been described as one artificial series because of the way in which they were preserved during the re-location of offices.
